Pelvic Health Care That Nobody Should Have to Google

Pelvic floor physiotherapy treats the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. Those muscles hold you continent, stabilize your low back and pelvis, and matter during pregnancy, birth, recovery, and sex. When they weaken, tighten, or lose coordination, you may experience leaking, urgency, heaviness, pain, or a core that will not switch back on after a baby. None of it is a normal part of aging or motherhood, and most of it responds well to treatment.

Assessment and treatment happen one-on-one with Irene Chau, MScPT, BSc.Kin (Hons), a registered physiotherapist certified in pelvic health through Pelvic Health Solutions, with extensive training in childbirth, diastasis recti, and postpartum care. Sessions run in a private treatment room rather than a shared gym floor, and she treats men as well as women. Your first visit covers history and an external assessment of posture, breathing, and core control. An internal examination gives the clearest picture of pelvic floor strength and tone, so we offer it, explain exactly what it involves, and only proceed with your consent. Declining changes nothing about your welcome here, and effective treatment still goes ahead. Many patients pair pelvic floor work with pregnancy chiropractic or massage therapy for the back and hip pain that travels alongside.

What to Expect :

We treat stress and urge incontinence, urgency and frequency, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic and tailbone pain, painful intercourse, diastasis recti, C-section and perineal scar recovery, pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, postpartum core rehabilitation, constipation, and post-prostatectomy incontinence in men. Pelvic floor physiotherapy bills under your regular physiotherapy benefit, and no referral is required in Ontario. Call 905-534-8666 with any questions before you book.

Why CHoose Us

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Handled With Privacy and Skill

Certified in Pelvic Health Through Pelvic Health Solutions

Pelvic health requires training well beyond the physiotherapy degree. Irene Chau, MScPT holds registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and pelvic health certification through Pelvic Health Solutions, with extensive training in childbirth, diastasis recti, and postpartum recovery. She treats in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

A Private Room, Every Session

Every appointment runs one-on-one behind a closed door. No curtained bay, no shared floor, no overheard conversations. The subject matter is personal and the setting should match.

Consent Leads, Always

An internal assessment is offered and explained, never assumed. You can decline it, pause at any point, or start externally and revisit later. Treatment still works, and you stay in control of every step.

Billed Under Your Physiotherapy Coverage

Pelvic floor physiotherapy claims against your standard physiotherapy benefit rather than a separate limit, and no referral is needed in Ontario. Our front desk submits on the day you are treated.

Common does not mean normal, and it does not mean permanent.

Leaking on the treadmill, planning routes around bathrooms, a core that never came back after birth, pain during intimacy you have not mentioned to anyone, or heaviness that worsens by evening. Every one of these is treatable, and none of them is something to wait out. Book a private pelvic floor assessment at our Markham clinic, or call 905-534-8666 with any questions first.

I started seeing Dr. Fiona over 10 months ago for severe back pain, and she has been professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring throughout my recovery. She always took the time to listen, explain the treatment, and make sure I was comfortable. Thanks to her care, my back pain has improved significantly.

I have been seeing Shahrzad regularly for over two years now, and the results speak for themselves. Every session leaves me feeling looser, more mobile, and completely refreshed. She is so good at what she does I followed her to the Northville location! Highly recommend her to anyone looking for a fantastic osteopath.

Amazing experience with Rachel! I completely tore my ACL and my meniscus, had fractures on my femur and tibia, couldn’t walk, but after a couple of sessions with Rachel, I can walk and bear weight now. Thanks Rachel!

Multi-Disciplinary Care

I came in with pain in my forearms, jaw, shoulders and lower back. Dr. Fiona Chan is extremely thorough. Her adjustments are accurate, gentle and very effective. Irene’s exercise programs target my posture directly, and Shahrzad picks up on the tiniest tension patterns. Chiropractic, physiotherapy and osteopathy together have greatly decreased my pain.

Frequent Asked Questions

What does pelvic floor physiotherapy actually treat?

Urinary leaking with coughing, sneezing, or exercise, sudden urgency and frequent trips to the bathroom, pelvic organ prolapse and heaviness, pelvic, tailbone, or low back pain, painful intercourse, diastasis recti, C-section and perineal scar restriction, pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, postpartum core weakness, constipation, and incontinence after prostate surgery.

Yes. Men have a pelvic floor too, and it produces the same range of problems. We treat incontinence and urgency after prostate surgery, pelvic and tailbone pain, chronic pelvic pain, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and core weakness. Male pelvic health goes untreated mostly because few men know the option exists, so ask rather than assuming this is not for you.

Expect about an hour. We talk through your symptoms, bladder and bowel habits, birth or surgical history, and what you want back. Then an external assessment of posture, breathing, abdominal wall, and hips. An internal examination gets offered with a full explanation, and treatment begins once you have decided how you want to proceed.

No. It gives the clearest information about how your pelvic floor contracts and relaxes, which is why we offer it, but it is entirely your choice. Plenty of patients start externally and revisit the option later, or never have one. Say no at the start or partway through, and treatment simply adapts.

No. Men benefit too, particularly after prostate surgery, and for chronic pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and bowel problems. The pelvic floor does the same work in every body. Male patients are welcome and treated with the same privacy.

Most patients are seen from about six weeks postpartum, often at the same point as the standard obstetric check. Come sooner if something worries you, since plenty can be addressed with breathing, positioning, and scar care before six weeks. There is also no upper limit. Patients arrive years or decades later and still improve.

Yes. Treatment during pregnancy helps with pelvic girdle and low back pain, prepares the pelvic floor for birth, and teaches pushing mechanics and recovery strategies before you need them. Tell us your due date when booking so we can allow the right time and positioning.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy bills as physiotherapy, so it draws on your existing physiotherapy benefit rather than a separate allowance. No referral required in Ontario, though some policies want a physician’s note before reimbursing. Call 905-534-8666 and we will confirm your coverage first.

Straightforward stress incontinence often improves noticeably within four to six sessions, with home exercise doing much of the work between visits. Long-standing pelvic pain and complex postpartum recovery take longer. Your physiotherapist gives an estimate after the assessment and reviews it as you progress.

Come anyway. Internal assessment can still go ahead if you are comfortable, or we work externally that day and reschedule the internal portion. Just mention it when you arrive. Nothing about this is unusual for us.
